7th Grade Social Studies

  • Course Description:

7th grade Social Studies is broken into two sections. Semester one World History and Semester two Washington State History. Throughout these two sections students will engage in multimedia presentations, choice driven research, answer DBQs (Document Based Questions), explore primary and secondary sources, and investigate and create personal claims.

Continuing their journey from 6th grade, students will begin the year with a focus on the Byzantine Empire and its importance in history. Students will then move onto Asia where they will gain a basic understanding of Imperial China, and the civilizations of Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia during the 500s-1400s. For the final World History unit students will explore Medieval Europe, the Renaissance and Reformation, and the Ages of Exploration and Trade.

During second semester, students will embark upon a historical survey of Washington State. Students will also examine the geography, geology, economics, and government of their state and analyze their impacts.  There will also be a joint community service project with their science class in which students will learn about the local history of the Maple Valley, Black Diamond, and Ravensdale area.

7th Grade English Language Arts

  • Course Description:

In the Grade 7 ELA Curriculum, students explore the theme of Choice while becoming more proficient and complex readers and writers.  Students learn to generate ideas through close reading, purposeful research, and productive collaboration. After learning how to write effective expository texts, students build on this knowledge by creating convincing argumentative texts.  Students read the novel Tangerine by Edward Bloor.  Additionally, students explore a range of contemporary and classic poems, monologues, and dialogues to refine their understanding of how writers use language for effect.

Our year consists of four units: one reading, two writing, and one drama.  At the end of each unit is an embedded assessment that students will need to complete at school.  Throughout the units we will have several smaller formative assessments to help prepare students for the end of unit assessments.  We also do a mid-year assessment to check for growth and help prepare students for the end of the year.
